The hamlet of Hebden Bridge developed in late medieval times as a river crossing and meeting point of packhorse routes from Halifax to Heptonstall, Burnley and Rochdale. As the textile industry developed in the valley bottoms, limited flat land led to the development of the towns characteristic double decker housing.
The network of historic packhorse routes criss crossing the hills and valleys have left the area with an enviable selection of bridleways and the town is a hub for mountain biking.
Wander the creative, bohemian streets of Hebden Bridge, and you can feel the influence of the writers and artists who flocked to the village around the 70s and 80s. From artisan shops and inspiring galleries to organic pavement cafés and charming picture houses, the village is justifiably proud of its artistic identity. There is a great selection of small independant shops, cafes and eateries as well as a theatre, picture house and live music venue.
