South Shields Museum is a fascinating free attraction at the heart of South Shields and is the perfect place to learn more about the rich history and heritage of the area.
The story of South Tyneside is told through some sensational displays, hands on exhibits and stunning art.
Visitors can find out more about the lasting legacy the area has made far afield, such as our extensive mining and ship building past, the Jarrow March, Dame Catherine Cookson and much more.
The Tales of South Tyneside exhibit specifically focuses on local people at home, play, work and war over the last century. While in Creature Corner you can meet some interesting characters, such as spiders, snakes and other creepy crawlies.
The museum has been located on Ocean Road for over 150 years and even just the historic building itself is worth a look.
There are regular events throughout the year, with a rolling programme of temporary exhibits on offer too.
The museum's shop has a great choice of souvenirs and gifts, while if you fancy a treat then take a seat in the Victorian pantry and enjoy a cup of tea and a home-made cake, scone or sandwich.
