Colley Hill and Pilgrim Brewery afternoon walk

05/10/2019

Walking event

Join North Downs Way Ambassadors Karol Zemek and Chris Howard for a half-day walk from Merstham to Reigate, passing through two of the best viewpoints on the whole of the National Trail. After a wander through the Capability Brown gardens of Gatton Park and the Reigate Hill viewpoint, the walk peaks at Colley Hill, with its splendid Edwardian folly and sweeping views onto other parts of the North Downs, the Weald, Reigate and Gatwick Airport. We end with an optional visit to the tap room of the Pilgrim microbrewery, which serves not only delicious beer, but also local cider and gin.

Highlights: Colley Hill and Reigate Hill viewpoints, Gatton Park, Reigate Fort, Pilgrim Brewery

Length: Around 7 km, which should take approximately 3 to 4 hours. Several sections feature ascents, and there is one steep descent.

Start: Merstham station, 14:00. Meet outside the station building. Note that if arriving from London, you will need to exit through the barriers and then cross the footbridge.

End: Pilgrim Brewery, West Street, Reigate. This is in the town centre, a 10-15 minute walk from Reigate station. Those not wishing to visit the brewery can go straight to the station, bypassing the town centre.

Transport: Merstham station is served by direct trains from London (Victoria and London Bridge), East Croydon and Reigate. Reigate station has direct trains to London Victoria, East Croydon, Redhill, Merstham, Dorking and Guildford. Both stations have parking available for bicycles and cars.

What to bring: Please wear shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground and for going up and down hills. It is usually a good idea to dress for all weathers (take a waterproof coat and a fleece or sweater even if you are not planning to wear them). Make sure to bring a bottle of water and perhaps some snacks. There will be one snack kiosk on the route, at the Reigate Hill car park (which also has toilets). Hiking poles may be a good idea if you will find these helpful when walking up and down hills. Note that the descent from Colley Hill is very steep.
