Where the England Coast Path joins Smoke Lane, Avonmouth, path users are instructed to continue eastwards on the north side of the road for approximately 280 metres to use the waymarked crossing point at the dropped-kerb, then doubling back along the south side of the road in a westerly direction. The reverse is recommended for path users approaching from the south, along Smoke Lane.
The road is used heavily by freight and HGV vehicles, with a 40mph speed limit rendering the bend a dangerous crossing point. For this reason the official England Coast Path route instructs users to cross the road along the straight section to the east.
