Statue of King Alfred the Great (848AD – 899AD) looks over Wantage Market Place. He was born on the royal estate nearby and likely walked or rode on horseback along parts of The Ridgeway. A famous battle against the Vikings around a ‘lone thorn tree’, known as the Battle of Ashdown, is thought to have taken place in the area.
