Willows of Wallingford

Sat, 28/04/2018 - 10:00

General event

An exhibition by local photographer John Hailstone to raise funds for St. Peter's Church, Wallingford in conjunction with The Churches Conservation Trust.

Photographer John Hailstone produces beautiful atmospheric images inspired by trees and the River Thames. This theme continues with his latest exhibition Willows of Wallingford on the weekend of 28 and 29 April in St Peter’s, the elegant church close to Wallingford Bridge. John, who lives in Wallingford, explains why he chose to photograph the willows: “In the summer of 2017, I was relearning a photographic technique from my past. I had photographed a favourite willow on the Thames Path near Wallingford on many occasions and this tree became one of my subjects as I honed my technique. It seemed to me that multiple exposure and willows are meant for each other. Each image was made by taking up to nine high resolution exposures of the individual willows whilst circling them and avoiding cow pats and other obstacles. As I photographed the willows, what was becoming apparent to me was a feeling of connection and that the multiple exposures were exposing the essence or spirit of the trees in the context of their surroundings.”

John’s Willows of Wallingford exhibition is being held in St Peter’s Church, Thames Street, Wallingford OX10 8BH from 10am to 6pm on Saturday 28 April, and from 11am to 4pm on Sunday 29 April. The Thames Path National Trail goes past the front gate of St Peter’s.

About St Peter’s Church and The Churches Conservation Trust
St Peter’s Church, with its notable stone spire, is a Grade II* Listed Building, now cared for by The Churches Conservation Trust, and a regular venue for classical music concerts and other arts events. The Churches Conservation Trust is the national charity protecting 350 beautiful and historic churches at risk. We care for the churches vested in us by the Church Commissioners of the Church of England, repairing the damage from sometimes years of neglect, and work with local communities to bring them alive again.
