Surface improvement works complete in Hampshire

4th March 2015

Flooding around Exton in Hampshire caused a serious damage to the surface of part of the South Downs Way between the Meon Valley Trail and Old Winchester Hill. This section of trail has always been an unsurfaced grass / earth path, but use during prolonged waterlogging had churned up the surface so as to make it almost impassable. This damaged muddy surface has now been scraped off and a crushed recycled stone laid over a permeable membrane.  This creates a firm but drained surface to walk or ride on.

This work is now complete and although it looks stark when new will soon blend in when grass grows in from the edges and leave litter falls on top.

Works are still ongoing to improve parts of the surface of the Meon Valley trail itself which also forms part of the SDW riders route to Exton. This should all be completed within the next month. Further works are planned in this area next year.
