Footprints of Sussex have a vast amount of experience of organising self-guided walking holidays on The South Downs Way. We have been leading walks and offering holidays along the The South Downs Way for over 25 years and each year in June we also lead the annual South Downs Way Walk along the trail in its entirety. That’s how we know the South Downs and the National Park so well. Being based here in Sussex and arguably the longest established, our knoweldge is second to none.

Our self-guided walking holidays and short breaks on The South Downs Way will give you the opportunity to see some of the finest countryside and historical sites in Britain, including the great iron age hill forts of Old Winchester Hill, Chanctonbury Ring and Devil’s Dyke.

We know this trail intimately; We have been organising walking holidays on the South Downs Way for 20 years, and for the past 10 years we have been leading the Annual South Downs Way Walk each June between Winchester and Eastbourne.

If you don’t have time to walk the South Downs Way in its entirety on one of our self-guided walking holidays you can also do it in small chunks with our self-guided weekend / short break walking holidays.

The South Downs Way was officially opened as a national trail in 1972. It ran from the village of Buriton, on the Hampshire/Sussex border, to Beachy Head high above Eastbourne. It faithfully followed the full 80-mile ridge of the southern chalk hills from their gentle rise at Harting Down to their dramatic departure beneath the English Channel.

Some fifteen years later it was decided to extend the route back into Winchester, primarily to join it up with the Clarendon Way going on to Salisbury and thereby adding another link to the complete ‘chain’ of long distance paths around England.

To many people the original ridge walk remains the true South Downs Way and to those still encumbered with work commitments it does make it a comfortable week’s holiday.
