Path improvements in the Yorkshire Dales

8th March 2016

Over the next few weeks there will be considerable repair works taking place on the Pennine Way over Fountains Fell in the Yorkshire Dales. Works will improve the surface for walkers and protect the surrounding hillside from further erosion. The materials for the repair work were carried into place by a helicopter over the course of 4 days in February, and works will be taking place until the end of March. The path will remain open at all times, but don't be surprised if you encounter large machinery and teams of rangers on the route!

Work is also taking place on the north slope of Penyghent, to trial a new technique of path construction. The north slope of Penyghent is badly eroded, and previous attempts at repairing it have not lasted well. If the technique is successful it will be extended to a longer length of the trail on Penyghent.
