The Thames Tideway Tunnel is a 25km ‘super sewer’ under the Thames to intercept the sewage and clean up the River Thames for the good of the city, its wildlife and everyone who lives, works and walks beside and across the river.
Greenwich Pumping Station, on Deptford Creek south of the Thames Path, is the starting point of the connection tunnel from Greenwich to Chambers Wharf. This connection tunnel will provide additional sewer capacity in South East London and will help tackle the problem of sewage overflow into the Deptford Creek and River Ravensbourne. The shaft has been sunk and work starts in 2018/19 on excavation to allow the tunnel boring machine to be lowered in.
