You can't really walk the Thames Path without taking a half day out to visit historic Hampton Court Palace, the gardens, the Maze, or go to the Flower Show or Music Festival.

Transformed into a magnificent palace by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey,(c.1514) a favourite of King Henry VIII, it was passed to the King when Wolsey fell from favour. It was rebuilt and expanded in the following century, by King William III and was intended to rival Versailles - resulting in two distinct contrasting architectural styles, domestic Tudor and Baroque.

June and July are the peak event months so check ahead; from October to Easter the gardens are open to the public free of charge. The Chapel Royal has daily services and access is free so schedule ahead to visit during a service or simply to look inside. Nearby Bushy and Home Parks and Strawberry Hill and Ham Houses are all bus accessible from Hampton Court station area. Stay a night and extend your walk in this beautiful historic area. You could also plan to take the ferry boat from here to Richmond for the next leg of your journey east. Do look at http://www.365tickets.co.uk/ if you plan to visit the palace  usually there are discounted ticket rates.
