Gloucestershire County Council has closed an unsafe bridge which carries the popular public footpath across the River Frome in Ebley, near Stroud.
The brickwork under the bridge, carrying the Cotswold Way between Bridge Mead and Ebley Fields, has been badly damaged by recent flooding and heavy rain. Safety inspectors have closed the bridge as it is unsafe for people to cross at this time.
Due to the deep and fast flowing water of the River Frome officers did not enter the water, however photos from taken the bank and using a selfie stick make it clear the masonry is crumbling.
A specialist divers survey will be needed to understand what needs to happen next to fix and reopen the bridge.
Officers followed up reports from concerned residents, and a survey of the bridge arches will be done shortly to understand what the damage is like under the water.
Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways said, said, “I’m pleased to see we have taken immediate action to close the bridge. The fast flowing water could cause the structure to collapse and we can not risk someone getting hurt. It’s clear this foot bridge has had to withstand the force of years of annual high river levels as well as recent weather, so it’s not surprising that this bridge needs repairs. We apologise for the inconvenience and we will look to get the bridge open again as quickly as possible.”
