The MacMillan Castles Bike Ride has been an annual feature on the Ridgeway for over 20 years. A multi-terrain cycling event, it attracts over 300 riders from the Swindon and Marlborough areas, and beyond who ride over 10, 20 or 30 mile routes to challenge themselves and raise funds for MacMillan.
The event starts in SWindon's Old Town and after a short road section opens out on to the downs to the south of Swindon and uses Sustrans NCN R45 and R482 and offers a great, but at times challenging ride. The short (10mile) course is designed for families or those taking part in their first charity ride, the medium (20mile) ride is for those with a little more off-road (trail) riding experience. Whilst the longer course (30-32 miles) is for more experienced MTB'ers. Although there are no real technical stretches, this route has several narrow woodland tracks off of the Ridgeway and features a few steep climbs and descents.
For road bike riders we also now have a 23 mile challenging bike ride in the area of the Ridgeway
The event is sponsored by local independent bike retailer Mitchell Cycles and mobile bike maintenance firm Mobile Cycle Medic; people from both firms are part of the organising committee
