Coalhouse Fort was built between 1861 and 1874 to protect England from invasion by the French. It was used again during WW1 and WW2 before being closed in 1956 following the abolition of Coastal Defence.
Run entirely by volunteers since 1983, the Coalhouse Fort Project has worked to keep this historical and unique location open to the public so an important fortification, like so many others, is not lost.
Open every last Sunday of the month (between March and September) and most bank holiday Mondays.
