A settlement has existed at Bridgwater for more than 1000 years based around the River Parrett. It became a town by Royal Charter in 1200 and grew in importance as a port. It even had a castle. The Docks, no longer in use, still have the machinery and gates that tell of their former role as a hub for the industry of the town - a heritage it celebrates with a number of museums and walking trails. The town is redolent with memories of battles, plots, pioneers and commerce. the tip in Bridgwater is to 'look up' as the streets boast some wonderful roofs, capstones and architectural curiosities.
