Bring Romance to the UK Trails

A guest blog by Jane Sandwood

Imagine taking a stroll, hand in hand with your loved one, along one of the UK’s most scenic trails, where you are surrounded by pure nature, accompanied by the sound of birds. Embark on a journey where you can spend quality time together, while you are both enchanted by the country’s heritage, and you will create memories that will be cherished for a long time.

Furthermore, there are additional psychological benefits of the romantic British outdoors. A study in Edinburgh that measured the brain activity of participants over a 25 minute walk through nature versus a busy commercial environment, found that people appeared in a much calmer state of mind while being in the green zone. With 15 different trails all over the UK you can easily plan a daytrip or a longer holiday with your other half and make it a special one.

Give trails a chance

The positive effects of nature and being outdoors is not a new revelation. Walking along the UK’s National Trails is not only beneficial for your health but if you share it with the one you love, you can better your relationship as well. Whether you are thinking about doing something different for a change, or you two are already hikers, here is how you can make it more romantic. After all, romance is one of the most crucial elements to a happy and successful relationship.

Step one: Make plans to explore the romantic UK trails

Planning a trip together is quality time. It will allow you to express what you are looking to get out of your adventure and start counting the days. There is no shortage of options. Certain trails, like the Cleveland Way, offer a bit of everything: coastline and moorland. You can both learn a bit of history or perhaps you can dazzle your partner with your existing knowledge about the ancient castles and their previous residents and then enjoy a lovely meal together at one of the local fishing villages.

If you have a shared passion for animals and birdwatching, choosing the Yorkshire Wolds Way will not disappoint. Along the picturesque chalk landscape with valleys and ancient villages you will be surrounded by wildlife. Will you be able to spot and name each one of the residents? You could even plan on having a competition and name a prize.

Or, if you’d rather enjoy a trail while cycling or horse riding, you can do that on the Pennine Bridleway. Whatever you choose, don’t forget about the accommodation. You can book a cute little B&B or plan to have a romantic camp out somewhere along the way. (But don’t forget wild camping is illegal in the UK.)

Step two: On the trail

Perhaps you are one of those couples who enjoy working out together? You needn’t stop while you are out and about. There are various exercises that you can take out of the gym and enjoy outdoors. What better way to start the day? Be sure to hold hands while you are walking, talk about the future or reminiscence about the past. Share your dreams and desires or even blow off some steam and moan about your boss if you feel like it. A few hours or few days of being outdoors will loosen anyone’s tongue.

Another fun activity to do together is treasure hunting, if you are that way inclined. There are many hidden gems along all national trails if you fancy geocaching.

Step three: At the end of the day

Why not crown the day with stargazing?  A study by the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that it provokes a sense of ‘awe’ which promotes helpful and positive social behaviour. Not only that, but there is certainly something magical about looking up into the deep universe together, trying to make out constellations while cuddling up, sharing a few laughs and appreciating how lucky you are to be in this world, surrounded by such beauty and people you love.

There is a journey waiting nearby that you can embark on together. Choose a trail that suits you both and make it memorable. It is easy to find exactly what you are looking for and you will sure be spending some quality time together.
