Additional information
Petworth is a delghtful little town with a very good range of shops and a Post Office. Tiffins Tea Shop in High Street is a fine establishment with splendid cakes. The Tourist Information Centre is in the little arcade, between the square and the main car park (great bakery here too...). Petworth is best know for two things - as a major centre for the antiques trade and for the impressive Petworth House and park. The House, built in 1682, is a National Trust property, open to the public from April to October (not Thurs/Fri). It contains a superb collection of paintings and sculpture, particularly Turners (the 3rd Lord Egrement was Turner's patron and Turner lived at Petworth for long periods). The Capability Brown landscaped Park is open in daylight hours all year (free) - great for waterfowl and for spotting the many fallow deer.
