Belle Tout, the first lighthouse at Beachy Head, was soon replaced. High on the clifftop it is too often swathed in fog to be useful, and the current lower level lighthouse at the bottom of the cliffs is in a much more reliable spot under the fog. In the late 1980s the nearby Signalman's Cottage, a Sussex Wildlife Trust visitor centre, burned down. A few years later the brand new Beachy Head pub and the replacement SWT visitor centre also burned down.Belle Tout is not, as most people assume, French. It's a corruption of Old Norse, and means Hill of the Fire God.
