During the First World War large numbers of Indian troops served in France as part of the British Imperial Army, and soon gained a very high reputation as soldiers. As with the Second World War Indian Army they were all volunteers, and played a vital role in holding the line while the tiny British (home) Army slowly recovered and rebuilt after the epic battles of 1914.Wounded Indian soldiers from the Western Front were nursed in Brighton (appropriately enough in the mock oriental Royal Pavillion amongst other places). Many did not recover from their wounds, and while Muslim troops were buried, non-Muslims were cremated at the Chattri which is now a war memorial.The British Indian Army was the largest all-volunteer army ever raised by any nation.
