The Winchester terminus of the South Downs Way National Trail is the City (water) Mill, now a National Trust property that's open to visitors (formerly a Youth Hostel). It is on the bridge over the River Itchen at the bottom of Broadway, Winchester's main shopping street. However for most people the nearby statue of King Alfred the Great makes a better marker and photo opportunity. You can't miss it. From this end of the Trail it is about 8 miles or 13 km to The Millburys, the next waypoint. The bridleway and cycle route via the A31 verge is about 1/2 mile or 1 km longer than the more direct footpath route to Chilcomb.
