The South Downs Way is well marked along its whole route with signposts, coloured arrows and the National Trail Acorn logo. But we do reccommend that you carry a map with you on your journey, you can be reassured that you are on the right track and it means you can deviate off the Trail to explore the surrounding area.
The most detailed and comprehansive maps of the South Downs are produced by Ordnance Survey. The Landranger 1:50 000 scale maps are good for covering larger distances and are quite popular for cycling. The Explorer 1:25 000 scale map series is more detailed than the Landranger maps and are ideal for walkers.
Both series of Ordnance Survey maps require multiple maps to cover the whole length of the South Downs Way. Harvey maps produce a one sheet strip map covering the whole Trail at 1:40 000 (see below).
