The Ridgeway and Thames Path National Trails are managed together by a joint Management Group composed of senior officers of each of the highway authorities through whose areas the Trails pass, Natural England, the Environment Agency and Tourism South East.

A small team of staff based with Oxfordshire County Council undertakes the day to day management of The Ridgeway in conjunction with the highway authorities and other partners.  Volunteers, managed by the team, carry out maintenance of much of the route.

There has been a recent programme of surface repairs, that is still underway, and protection of vulnerable sections of the Trail by the use of traffic regulation orders (TROs) to restrict vehicle use of byway sections.
