Visit the best preserved Roman fort in Britain. Housesteads is the most famous fort on Hadrian's Wall and lies on the great volcanic escarpment of Whin Sill. One of the 12 forts added to the Wall in about AD124, it was designed to contain a garrison of 800 soldiers.

Excavations at the fort have revealed four double-portal gateways, the curtain wall with turrets and latrines and three barrack blocks. At the centre are the most important buildings: the commanding officer's house, headquarters building and hospital. Then, of course, there are the breathtaking views and the museum - complete with a model of how the site would once have looked. Housesteads Roman Fort is part of the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site.
