Facilities and additional information

Vindolanda is a fascinating Roman fort and settlement lying just to the south of Hadrian's Wall. Recent excavations have uncovered numerous buildings and some of the most unusual and well preserved artifacts from the Roman world. In the superb site museum, set in charming gardens, you can see Roman boots, shoes, armour, jewellery and coins.

Special photographs of rare ink on wood documents allow you to read letters written nearly two thousand years ago. Nestling in the museum gardens are full sized reconstructions of a Roman temple, a Roman shop, Roman house and Northumbrian croft - all with audio presentations.

On the site itself stands a full size replica of a section of Hadrian's Wall in both stone and timber, giving the visitor a true idea of the impressive might of the monument. There are ongoing archaeological excavations at the site each year, giving the visitor a chance to see history in the making.

Visitor facilities include an excellent souvenir and book shop, as well as the welcoming Café Lepidina! Quiz trails, scenic picnic areas and toilets.
