General Advice from the National Trail Team

If you are organising a walk for a large group or for a charity event the following tips are for your guidance. The advice attempts to strike a balance between our need to manage and conserve the Trail and World Heritage Site, and your desire for an enjoyable walk.
- The National Trail project cannot, at the moment, offer you a guiding service. If you require an experienced guide please consider one of the walking operators (see the Guides, Tour Operators & Baggage Transfer section).
- It is vital that you familiarise yourself with the Trail long before the actual event. Do be aware of the terrain and think about the abilities of your walkers. Many groups either underestimate the difficulty of the walk or overestimate their own abilities. See the Gradient Profile on the Trail leaflet.
- Please plan your walk for the drier months of the year, between May and October. Avoiding the wet winter months will help to prevent erosion to both the Trail and monument (archaeology).
- Do let the National Trail Manager know that you are planning an event. You will be given as much advice and help as possible. Please write to David McGlade, Hadrian's Wall Heritage Limited, Dipton Mill Road, Hexham, Northumberland, NE46 2JT or e-mail David with details. For events in the Northumberland National Park, please contact Paget Lazarri, Senior Ranger. E-mail: paget.lazzari@nnpa.org.uk or Tel: +44 (0) 1434 344430 or Mobile: 07795 834951.
- A party of 50 is considered to be a reasonable upper limit for an event walk; during the peak season larger groups may encounter parking congestion at some places used as check points. Remember that your large group may not be the only one on the Trail at any one point in time. Please refer to the Events Planner Guide provided by Northumberland National Park.
- Note that there is absolutely nowhere to park in either Port Carlisle or Bowness-on-Solway. Taking a coach into the latter has, in the past, caused chaos there.
- Be aware of where all the WCs, water taps and other facilities are. Please avoid knocking on private occupiers' doors to ask for water.
- Read the Advice, Top Tips & Frequently Asked Questions section for good general advice!
