Hadrian's Wall Path | National Trail

Erosion of the physical infrastructure is affected by a combination of four main factors: visitor pressure, gradient, soil condition and rainfall. The timing and scale of the walk can make a considerable difference to the success or otherwise of the event.  Particularly on Hadrian’s Wall, the underlying archaeology is very close to the path surface. A large scale event during poor weather can be disastrous, whereas a number of smaller events planned for dry conditions over the same route will be far less damaging.

Walking on the Wall is to be avoided at all times as this may cause it to collapse. Please take notice of signs on route that may divert you around an eroded area to avoid causing further damage to the path.

Event Planner Checklist

• Will our event damage the surface of any route used or the monument itself? For example, it is recommended that people walk in broad groups rather than single file to reduce their impact.
• Could this event be equally successful on a less sensitive site?
• Could an alternative route be considered at short-notice if the weather becomes too bad?
• Is the timing of our event appropriate? Please note that Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail is a footpath only and that large scale events should be only be considered between mid- April and end of October.
• Have we informed all landowners along the proposed route of the event?
• Have we informed Natural England regarding protected sites along the route of the event? (see www.naturalengland.org.uk)
