Challenge, Charity & Running Events
WE DO NOT ADVISE RUNNING ON HADRIAN'S WALL PATH
For very good conservation reasons, running events along Hadrian's Wall Path are discouraged - the National Trail is geared up to manage walkers, not runners. The risk of erosion to the underlying archaeology is much greater with runners than walkers. Therefore preservation of the grass surface (and any underlying archaeology) is our chief concern and the entire management and maintenance of the Trail/monument is geared up to its use for walking only.
We have previously discussed the matter with the Fell Running Association and they have agreed, in line with their policy on the protection of sensitive areas, to avoid Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and the National Trail in the scheduling of their events. The policy has also been endorsed by the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site Management Committee.
We do understand your motivation for using Hadrian's Wall for a race but hope that you understand the reasoning behind our stance. Please get in touch with David McGlade, National Trail Manager (david.mcglade@hadrianswallheritage.co.uk), if you wish to discuss it further.
We are, however, working in partnership with a new community-led organisation with a view to designing alternative challenge routes, of varying length, within the World Heritage Site. It will take some time before these routes are ready, so please be patient and in the meantime we will be very grateful if you decide to not organise running events along the Trail.
ADVICE FOR GROUPS WALKING HADRIAN'S WALL PATH
If you are organising a walk for a large group or for a charity event, the following information is for your guidance. It includes information about the various policies, guidelines and available assistance from the many landowners and organisations that have a vested interest in the conservation of the monument and the management of public access along its length.
The advice attempts to strike a balance between our need to manage and conserve the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site, and your desire for an enjoyable event.
