Happy Birthday Hadrianus Aelius!
Today is the 1930th birthday of the Emperor Hadrian, born January AD76.
That's a lot of candles !
It was in AD122 that construction of the wall began. Running 73 miles from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west, Hadrian's Wall was probably originally about 20ft tall, and remains the most complete frontier of the Roman Empire. Today the wall is a great tourist attraction.
The National Trail (84miles/135km)
For most of it's length, the National Trail runs alongside or close to the wall itself. In some places the Trail diverges from the line of the Wall to take a more convenient or attractive route.
