Newcastle presents a compact package of history and culture, both old and new, all within a stone's throw of the Tyne bridge.

Starting at the 14th century cathedral with its unusual lantern spire visit the Norman Keep, itself built on the site of the Roman fort of Pons Aelii, then Bessie Surtees House16th and 17th century merchants' houses. Admire the Tyne Bridge, Robert Stephenson's 1849 High Level Bridge and William Armstrong's 1876 Swing Bridge. 

Walk along the quayside and cross the Tyne over the Gateshead Millennium bridge before visiting the Sage Music Centre and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
