Search the shore below Whitby Abbey and you are sure to discover St Hilda’s petrified headless snakes, toenails of the devil and the thunderbolts created when he flashed lightening to the ground! In 657 A.D. Hilda, later Saint Hilda, established a monastery at Streonshalh, now called Whitby, on a site close to the present abbey. This was to become a very important religious site for the next 200 years until sacked by the Danes in 867.
