Built for the late Victorian portrait painter G. F. Watts, the chapel is an eclectic mix of architectural styles but notably Arts and Crafts. The interior is startling with somewhat overpowering art nouveau motifs. George and Mary Watts are buried in the churchyard in a cloister designed by Mary. There are some fine Art Nouveau tombstones, the best to Julian Sturgis. The Gallery near Watt s house, Limnerslease, has art exhibitions and a restaurant.In Compton, there is a fine Norman church, St Nicolas, with a double-decker chancel.
