These old industrial complexes lie about a kilometre apart. There was an extensive railway system of horse drawn wagons on narrow gauge lines within the quarries to serve the various industries - mining of chalk and hearthstone, brickmaking and sand extraction. Chalk from the quarries was burnt for lime and some kilns still survive. See Betchworth Quarry too.
