All walks are on public rights of way and suitable for those used to walking in the countryside.  Some parts of each walk involve stiles and a little lane walking and care should be taken to avoid traffic.

WALK 1 - Horsley Wood [4 miles with undulating paths and two short steep gradients]

Start at east end of village near old chapel and descent Mill Way lane to Horsley Wood noted for its bio-diversity and archaeology, take diagonal path to Wylam pumping station.  Follow road east taking care where there is no path until signposted path Holeyn Hall Rd is reached.  Lovely view of River Tyne from cliff at top of this path.  On reaching the road head north until path labelled Horsley is reached.  Path has a steady rise with stunning views at summit.

WALK 2 – Into the sunset [5 miles with undulating paths]

Leave the village on path at entrance to water treatment plant near South farm.. C18th century field patterns and stunning views of Tyne Valley.  Take care crossing Gallowhill lane and proceed west across arable land to Whittle dene.  Beautiful woodland particularly in April/May.  Follow wood path until bridge over A69 road is reached.  Spital once a Medieval hospital is an idyllic location.  Proceed through former farm until you reach Harlow Hill road and turn south.  Take footpath marked Horsley to Duns Law and Horsley Hill site of Iron Age hill fort.  Great views of Cheviot, Simonside and N. Pennine Wilderness.  Take care crossing A69 into Lead Lane.

WALK 3 – Hadrian’s Wall – [5 miles]

Start at east end of village with path marked Horsley Marsh.  On reaching A69 roundabout take left fork which turns into narrow lane and becomes Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail.  Follow trail west at Two Hoots until you reach entrance to Albermarle barracks.  Just past the entrance cross Military road to signpost marked Horsley.  Head for North Dunslawholm and cross aqueduct now disused and once water supply for Newcastle.  Take path up and over arable land to Horsley hill crossing A69 into Lead Lane.
