Caedmon stoneEngland's First Poet
Although the present abbey at Whitby dates from 1078 it is close to the site of an earlier abbey founded by Abbess Hilda in 657. It was here that a shy, middle aged farm worker named Caedmon became the creator of English sacred song and the country's first poet.
